How to Start Saving Money This January

How to Start Saving Money This JanuaryLooking for some ways to save money after all that splurging for the holidays? One of the best ways to cut costs for the new year is by implementing energy-efficient procedures throughout your home. Read on for some of the best practices for saving money in 2019.

Turn Back the Thermostat

Turning back the thermostat by 10-15 percent for just eight hours a day can reduce your bill by 10 percent. That could mean just raising the thermostat a few degrees this winter for the eight hours or so that you’re away from home. Increase savings by raising the thermostat again at nighttime when you’re sleeping. Your best bet to ensure you keep on schedule is to install a programmable thermostat.

Seal Air Leaks

Go around your home with a smoke pencil or lit incense stick and look for drafts. If the smoke wavers in front of door and window frames, baseboards, electrical outlets and the points in exterior walls where pipes, wires and cables enter, you have an air leak. Stop leaking air with caulk, weatherstripping and insulation.

Maintain Your Ductwork

Over time, ductwork can develop holes and cracks, and segments can come apart. That means your conditioned air is leaking into unconditioned spaces, while unconditioned air (including humidity and dirt) can be getting in to your HVAC system and your home through the breaches in the ductwork. If you can access your ductwork, check ducts for disconnected segments and holes and cracks. Fix any leaks with mastic, foil tape and metal screws.

Change the Air Filter

A dirty air filter will slow down the airflow in your HVAC system and cause it to run inefficiently as it labors to heat or cool. Change the filter regularly — once a month for inexpensive fiberglass filters and at least every 90 days for denser, pleated filters. If you have shedding pets and a high volume of traffic in your home, check the filter frequently and change it as needed.
