It doesn’t take much to claim to be an HVAC contractor—a business card and a cellphone number are sometimes all that are presented. However, a truly reputable, established contractor will demonstrate they have met certain requirements to do business as contractors. Licensing and insurance are evidence that an HVAC contractor has made these minimum commitments to conduct legitimate business. Here’s more on HVAC licensing and insurance:
Licensing
Contractor’s licenses in Texas are issued by the Texas Department Of Licensing and Registration. In order to install or service HVAC equipment, a contractor is required to pass an examination and pay a registration fee. The status of a contractor’s license may be verified online at the Department Of Licensing and Registration website.
Insurance
An established HVAC contractor in business to stay will invest in liability insurance to cover any damage to your home that might occur when installing or repairing HVAC equipment. If the contractor is keeping up with the premiums, he or she should be able to show current proof of insurance. Reputable companies also carry worker’s compensation insurance to protect their employees in the event of on-the-job injuries.
