The Coastal Bend area may not have the coldest winters in Texas, but that’s no reason not to squeeze all the efficiency you can out of your heating system. Installing a zoning system is one way you can do that. With a zoned system, you stand to save between 15 and 29 percent on your heating and cooling bills, compared to a non-zoned system.
A zoning system gives you greater control
In the typical home during winter, it’s common for some rooms to get too hot while others never feel warm enough. Raising the thermostat for the whole house just to get those cold rooms warmer wastes energy and often leaves you less comfortable.
Zoning lets you heat and cool different parts (zones) of your home independently from one another. For example, if you have a two-story home where the ground floor tends to be chilly, you can direct more heat there than to the upper floor. You’ll save energy and lower your heating bills because you’ll no longer have to overheat some rooms to compensate for others.
In addition to more consistent temperatures, some systems also use your variable- or multi-speed blower motor to optimize dehumidification when you’re cooling in summer.
The technology behind zoning
A zoned heating and cooling system consists of a series of motorized dampers in the ducts, a programmable thermostat for each zone, and a control panel. The thermostats open and close the dampers to control the flow of conditioned air to each zone. Most homes have between two and five heating and cooling zones.
Where zoning helps
Your home is a good candidate for a zoning system if you’re dealing with any of these situations:
- Two or more levels
- A sprawling floor plan
- Rooms with large windows or bay windows
- Rooms with vaulted or cathedral ceilings
- A finished attic or basement
- Room additions
