The unpredictable weather of the Coastal Bend can leave your HVAC system vulnerable to damaging high winds, heavy rains and hail if you’re not prepared. The best way to avoid inconvenience, repairs or component replacements due to severe weather is to take a proactive approach with these storm preparation tips.
Preparations You Can Make Immediately
Now’s a good time to check that your outdoor unit is securely anchored to its concrete pad and the metal tie-downs are in good condition. If you’re concerned about impact damage, have hail guards installed to protect the coil fins. Whole-house surge protection is another worthwhile investment to safeguard the HVAC system and other sensitive equipment against power surges. If you’re worried about losing cooling capabilities during an extended power outage, talk to an HVAC contractor about the benefits of owning a backup generator.
Steps to Take When a Storm is Forecast
When you’re warned about an approaching storm, secure or put away outdoor furniture, childrens’ toys, lawn equipment, outdoor plants and other items that can become hazardous flying projectiles in high winds. Just before the storm hits, turn off your HVAC system at the thermostat and via the circuit breakers in your electrical panel.
What to Do After the Storm Subsides
Don’t start up your HVAC system until you take a few safety-minded steps. First, call the electric company to learn whether there are any nearby downed power lines. Then, head outside and check the condenser unit for damage. If you see any of the following issues, have an HVAC pro perform a thorough inspection:
- Evidence of flooding or water damage.
- Damage to the electrical wiring or refrigerant lines.
- Impact damage to the coil.
- Scorch marks or burnt wiring odors.
If everything looks okay, clear away any debris from around the unit, then flip the breakers back on and reset the thermostat.
