Year-Round Energy Efficiency With An Air-Source Heat Pump

April 12, 2012 | Blog

The weather is about to warm up in South Texas, which means that summer’s heat is just around the corner. If you need more energy efficiency for your cooling and heating equipment, consider an air-source heat pump. These systems are one of the best ways to condition the air in your home year-round, especially in our mild winter climate. An air-source heat pump uses electricity and refrigerant to move heat from one place to another, so it doesn’t need fuel to provide heat in the winter. As a result, a properly maintained air-source heat pump can provide one and a half to three times the heat energy of the electricity it consumes.

All heat pumps carry energy efficiency ratings – SEER for cooling and HSPF for heating. SEER stands for seasonal energy efficiency ratio while HSPF stands for heating season performance factor. The ratings are expressed as numbers, and higher numbers indicate better efficiency. The federal EPA regulates the minimum SEER and HSPF ratings for new heat pumps, which must be at least 13 SEER and 7.7 HSPF.

Besides meeting the standards for SEER and HSPF, some features of air-source heat pumps can increase the efficiency, including:

Variable-speed motors. These operate the air handler and run much more quietly than a single-speed motor. The motors use less electricity and can vary their speed to overcome extra back pressure such as a dirty filter.
Dual-speed compressors. A standard compressor sits outdoors and runs at one speed. Dual-speed compressors can vary their speeds based on how much heating and cooling is needed. During hot or cold weather, they run at top speed, but when conditions moderate, they run more slowly, saving energy dollars.
Scroll compressors. Instead of a piston compressor, these use scrolls that rotate instead of pump. This kind of compressor lasts longer and adds 10 to 15 degrees more heat during the winter.
