The simplest thing that homeowners can do to cut the cost of their electric bill and protect their heating and cooling system is to change the air filter in the furnace on a regular basis. Clean air filters will ensure that dust and dirt does not building up inside your HVAC system which could cause it to operate inefficiently and could lead to expensive repair bills down the road.
Air filters alone cannot stop allergens from entering your home, but they do serve a critical purpose for your heating and cooling system. The purpose of the filter is to protect your equipment, which is why changing the filter or cleaning it on a regular basis is essential. Disposable polyester pleated filters offer a good amount of protection at a fair price and when swapped out regularly will meet the needs of many in the Corpus Christi area.
There are other types of permanent filters that will work even better with most heating and cooling systems. Some of these will have to be professionally installed however and take up more space than the disposable ones. Mathews CCAC Air Conditioning recommends high density disposable filter cartridges for Texas homes. They have no moving parts and won’t break down. These filters also can function longer and go six months to a year without having to be changed.
While some air filters will claim to clean the air that you breathe inside your home, it is difficult to back up these claims. Unless you upgrade to an air purifier, do not expect the typical furnace filter to be able to block out most allergens and germs. One type of filter that will not work well in the Corpus Christi area is the electrostatic filter. The humidity in Texas will not allow the electrostatic air filters to work properly and they should not be used.
