Decoration storage in hot, humid climates like ours is always a challenge, especially since most of the homes in the region don’t have basements. The decorations need to be in a place where they won’t be affected by the heat or the humidity. It’s natural to want to keep them out of the attic, where temperatures soar well into the 100s on a hot, sunny day for months on end.
Avoid Fire Hazards
Another place you may not have thought of as being bad for the holiday decorations is your furnace closet or room. While it’s probably indoors where you keep it comfortable and won’t harm the Christmas things, it can damage your furnace and HVAC system. While the sentimental value the ornaments and decorations have is important, it’s also critical to keep the environment around your HVAC system clear.
The HVAC System Needs Its Own Space
Your HVAC system needs plenty of room around it for adequate ventilation. It’s especially important when it’s in the heating mode. If you do need to use the extra space around your HVAC equipment, leave enough room around it so that HVAC technicians can easily move around it to service and repair it.
Safe Decoration Storage Options
The garage may be a good place for decoration storage. It’s probably cooler than the attic during the hottest parts of the day. Plastic tubs with tight-fitting lids will keep the bugs out of the boxes. As long as the tubs are free from anything resembling food (like decorated cookies or candy), they shouldn’t attract any insects or vermin.
