Indoor air pollution is a problem in a surprising number of households, especially as the relationship between energy efficiency and proper ventilation gets more complex. Air purifiers, better filters and smart ventilation systems can add up to thousands of dollars, but are they really worth it? These systems effectively clean indoor air and make your home healthier, potentially preventing several health effects of indoor air pollution.
Short-Term Health Impact
Pollutants, such as dust mites, pollen, mold and mildew, can cause allergic reactions or respiratory distress. People who have preexisting cardiovascular issues are generally at a higher risk when they breathe in polluted indoor air. Depending on the severity of the problem, you may also experience Sick Building Syndrome, which is characterized by such symptoms as:
- Fatigue
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Dry coughing
- Itchiness
- Dry eyes, mouth and nose
- Difficulty concentrating
- Odor sensitivity
Sick Building Syndrome often mimics colds, depression and other issues, but symptoms get noticeably better when you spend time away from home.
Chronic Health Effects
The long-term health effects of indoor air pollution range from moderate to severe. You may experience bronchitis or pneumonia, especially if you suffer from allergies or asthma. Heart palpitations and mild to moderate heart attacks may also occur. Anyone who already has heart or lung disease may experience aggravated symptoms or worsening symptoms over time.
Some killers are completely silent and invisible. Carbon monoxide poisoning is a risk with poor ventilation and/or poorly-maintained home equipment. If there’s radon buildup – a relatively common result of inadequate ventilation – lung cancer may develop in the future.
If you just moved or live in an older home, it’s critical to have your indoor air quality assessed by a qualified professional. This assessment will alert you to the presence of common indoor air pollutants, letting you correct ventilation, add air filters and upgrade HVAC equipment as needed.
